25 Years with the Los Angeles Korean Festival

For 53 years, the Los Angeles Korean Festival has brought together the culture of a cherished homeland and the memories of immigrant life, becoming part of the history of the Korean American community. Here, children discover their roots, and neighbors from other backgrounds experience Korean culture. Connecting generations through music and dance, the festival is a cultural legacy our community has built and nurtured together.

Last week, KOA Dance Federation and Jean Ballet School once again took part in this celebration. From children as young as three to senior dancers as old as 83, our performers shared ballet, Korean dance, acrobatics, and K-pop with the audience. Their performance was another meaningful milestone in 25 years of community service through local performances and dance education at preschools and kindergartens.

This year, children from 123 Preschool who have been learning dance with us also joined the festival. During rehearsals, one parent asked, “What if my child just sits onstage instead of dancing?” I smiled and replied, “Even sitting onstage is art.”

A child’s first performance is a precious opportunity to express themselves before the world. Even if the memory eventually fades, photographs and videos will allow them to look back with a smile and say, “That was my very first performance.” Those images will hold more than a moment onstage. They will also reflect the love of parents who helped prepare their child for that day and the dedication of a ballet teacher who recognized the child’s potential and helped it blossom through dance.

Our senior ballet dancers bring a lifetime of experience to the stage. Every outstretched arm and every step carry both the years they have lived and their desire to keep learning. As they find movements that suit their bodies and express themselves through music, they broaden our understanding of beauty. Having friends to rehearse with and a performance to prepare for brings a renewed sense of anticipation to daily life. Dance gives them another chapter to look forward to.

Our original dance piece commemorating Korea’s liberation offers a way to connect with history through movement. As second-generation Korean Americans prepare the work, they remember those who dedicated themselves to Korea’s independence and learn about their own roots. Their understanding deepens through that process, and onstage, they share Korea’s history and spirit with audiences across language barriers.

This year’s performance also required considerable effort behind the scenes. In unusually hot weather, a schedule delay left us waiting outdoors for more than two hours. Despite the exhausting conditions, our dancers and students looked after one another and saw the performance through with a strong sense of responsibility. I am deeply grateful to the teachers and parents who stayed by their side.

When students use the dance skills they have learned to bring joy to others, the hard work of practice becomes a source of fulfillment. The consideration and responsibility they develop while preparing together stay with them long after the performance ends. This is the meaning behind the service that KOA Dance Federation and Jean Ballet School have sustained over the years. As students learn and share their art, they also learn to care for their community.

Our culture lives on through the people who learn it and share it. The Los Angeles Korean Festival instills pride in the next generation’s heritage while introducing Korea to neighbors from other backgrounds. A festival that brings generations and neighbors together, encourages understanding, and strengthens community bonds has an essential place in Korean American life. Ensuring that this gathering, nurtured over so many years, continues for the next generation is a responsibility we all share.
