A promising Korean American officer in the United States Army on leave in Los Angeles was assaulted at a downtown nightclub, suffering major brain damage.
Albert Song, 24, a first lieutenant, was at the Icon LA Ultra Lounge to celebrate his friend’s wedding with about a dozen friends, the Korea Daily Los Angeles reported.

After a while, one of his friends became involved in a fight. Song tried to stop it but in the process, he was beaten and knocked to the ground.

An ambulance transported Song to a nearby hospital emergency room but when he arrived, he was already brain dead, the newspaper reported. One of Song’s friends told the newspaper that he heard that the assailant might have been a Korean American as well. He added that it was “Asian night” at the club and the majority of patrons were Korean American.

No suspects have been named in the fight but Los Angeles police are reportedly reviewing security footage of the fracas.

Song graduated from Whitney High School in Cerritos, Calif., and the United States Military Academy at West Point and was considered an elite officer. After he was commissioned as a second lieutenant, he completed training in the prestigious Ranger School and was stationed in Hawaii.

Song, a registered organ donor, will be kept on a respirator until his organs are donated to patients in need.
