미국 텍사스 주정부가 멕시코에서 넘어오는 불법 이민자를 차단하기 위해 국경 장벽 건설을 재개하기로 했다.
공화당 소속 그레그 애벗 주지사는 텍사스주의 국경 도시 델 리오에서 개최한 국경 안보 회의에서 이같이 밝혔다고 11일(현지시간) CNN 방송 등이 보도했다.
조 바이든 대통령은 지난 1월 취임 직후 행정 명령을 통해 도널드 트럼프 전 대통령 시절 추진했던 국경 장벽 건설을 중단시켰으나 텍사스주는 자체 예산을 투입해 장벽을 다시 세우겠다고 선언했다.
애벗 주지사는 "국경 위기를 해결하기 위해 변화가 필요하다"며 국경 장벽 건설을 시작하고 불법 이민자들을 체포하겠다고 밝혔다.
텍사스주는 장벽 건설 등 국경 안보 정책을 추진하기 위해 10억달러(1조1천억원) 예산을 배정하고 별도의 태스크포스(TF)를 구성하기로 했다.
국경 장벽 건설 재개를 위한 세부 계획은 다음 주 발표될 예정이다.
