중매사업을 25년째 하고 있고, 미국에서 서비스한 지 10년째이다. 그동안 미국에서만 3-4천명을 만났고, 1천명 정도 결혼시켰다. 미국에 정착했으면서도 뿌리를 잊지 않는 한국인 특유의 정서는 같은 한국계 배우자, 부모님 입장에서는 한국계 사위나 며느리를 맞이하고 싶은 마음으로 표출된 결과라고 생각한다.

결혼 세대, 그 부모 세대를 만나면서 미국 이민 2세대의 다양한 직업군을 보게 되었는데, 특징적이랄까, 신기한 현상이 있다. 결혼에서 성격이 중요한 건 누구나 공감하지만, 성격을 잘 알기 힘들기 때문에 최대한 파악을 하면서 그 다음으로 성취적인 부분, 예를 들어 학벌, 직업, 연봉 등을 고려하게 된다. 이렇게 보면 미국은 땅이 넓어선지 뛰어난 사람들이 많다.

뉴욕에서 만난 30대 중반의 여성이 있는데, 그녀는 하버드 출신의 변호사이다. 외모도 괜찮고, 똑똑하고 야무진 성격으로 남성들이 욕심낼만한 신부감이다. 반대쪽 LA에도 능력이 출중한 의사가 있다. 80년생의 이 남성은 ‘왜 아직 싱글일까?’ 이해가 안될 정도로 호감이 가는 누가 봐도 1등 신랑감이다.

이 두 남녀에게는 공통점이 있다. 힌트는? 부모님의 직업이다. 두 사람의 부모님 모두 세탁업을 하신다. 이 두 사람 뿐 아니라 세탁업을 하는 부모님의 자녀들 중에 출중한 인재들이 많다. 초기 이민세대에서 세탁소집 자녀들 중 성공한 사례가 많은 이유는 뭘까?

성실하고 꼼꼼한 한국인들의 특성상 세탁업이 잘 맞아서 많은 분들이 직업으로 택하고, 그래서 자녀들도 많은 것이다. 부모님 대부분은 힘들게 일해서 경제적인 성공을 거뒀고, 그 대부분은 자녀들의 교육에 쓰여졌다.

부모들이 자녀에게 경제력만 물려준 것이 아니다. 잠자는 시간 외에 일한 하던 부모님을 보고 자란 자녀들 역시 성실했고, 그것은 학업과 직업의 성취로 나타났다.

“어렸을 때는 눅눅한 세탁소에서 일만 하는 부모님들이 부끄럽기도 했어요. 다른 부모님들은 근사한 옷 입고 자가용 타고 출퇴근 하니까 비교가 되더라고요.”

“부모님이 늘 바쁘셔도 세탁소에 가면 계시니까 좋은 점도 있었어요. 부모님 옆에서 공부하고, 놀고, 그럴 수 있었으니까요. 그런 게 심리적인 안정을 준 것 같아요.”

세탁업은 남 보기에 근사한 직업은 아니다. 하지만 한국인 부모들은 뜨거운 김을 하루 종일 쐬면서도 자식들을 훌륭하게 키워냈으니 이것이 최고의 직업이 아니고, 무엇이겠는가.

아마 미국의 부모들은 버는 족족 자녀들에게 쓰는 한국 부모들이 이해가 되지 않을지도 모른다. 또 장성할 때까지 부모의 지원을 받는 한국 자녀들 흉을 볼지도 모른다. 하지만 부모가 공들인 만큼 잘 자라주는 것이 가장 큰 효도이고, 자녀의 성취가 곧 부모에게 가장 큰 보람인 것이 한국적인 사고방식이다.

그렇게 보면 미국에 있는 한국 세탁소집이야말로 성공적인 자녀 교육의 산실이며, 다리미가 뿜어내는 스팀 이상으로 뜨거운 열정과 끈끈한 가족애가 살아있는 곳이다.

Dry Cleaner’s Children, Their Success and Their Parents

I am in this matchmaking business for 25 years now, and in my 10th year in the U.S. already for  matchmaking through couple.net.  So far, I have met 3-4,000 people here and assisted 1,000 people to get married in the States.  Koreans abroad still keep this unique trait of preserving the national identity, even as they chose to live outside their mother land.  And this sentiment is expressed in them wanting to have their son-in-law or daughter-in-law from the same Korean lineage. 

As I meet the young generation and their parents, I get to see them engaged in greatly diverse jobs.  As we all agree, personality is perhaps the most important consideration in looking for a future spouse.  However, this personality is something unseen therefore we tend to rely on measurable elements such as education, occupation, annual income, etc. in evaluating a person. 

We see many outstanding Korean descendants in this vast land of the United of States. 

These great single lady and gentleman have something in common.  The answer lies in their parents’ occupation.  Yes, it is dry cleaning business.  Both of their parents are in dry cleaning business.  These two outstanding singles are not alone.  There are many successful children from families engaged in dry cleaning business.  Naturally, we wonder why.  

I met a single lady in mid-30s.  She is a Harvard graduate and a lawyer.  Being smart with a nice look, she is someone about any single man would want to marry.  Also, in the Los Angeles area, here is a nice single man.  Born in 1980, he is a medical doctor.  He is such an attractive person that we wonder how a guy this great is still a single.  

Many Korean immigrants chose dry cleaning for their livelihood, since they could do a good job in this business with their hard-working ethic and precise workmanship.   Many Koreans worked hard day and night, and earned financial wealth as the result.  Their hard-earned money was mostly spent for educating their children. 

Their children not just benefited from their parents’ wealth but they also inherited the hardworking spirit from their parents as well.  And this spirit of dedication was manifested in the children’s success in their careers or in academic fields.   

“When I was young, at times I was ashamed of my folks who were always working in a dingy and humid shop.  My classmates’ parents would pick them up after school in nice attire driving a nice car…”

“Although my folks were constantly busy, it was not that bad since they were always there at the shop, so I could stay near them, doing home works, playing, etc. at the shop.  That probably gave me a sense of security.”

Dry cleaning business is not a glamorous-looking job.  But wouldn’t you call it one of the greatest professions since they raised their children to become successful whiling working all day long amid sizzling steam and humidity? Probably other parents in the U.S. may not understand these Korean parents pouring all their finance into educating their children.  Or, they may scorn at full-grown Korean children still depending on their parents for financial support. 

But it is our Korean sentiment that the biggest payback a child can offer to his/her parents is to grow into a successful and reputable adult following the parents’ wish. 

In sum, Korean-run dry cleaning shops in the U.S. are the birthplace of successful children rearing, where strong and passionate family bond lives on, amid sizzling steam and heat.
