Four Biggest Mistakes in Couple’s Communication

“Just clam up and listen, will you?!”

We get to hear this in the middle of quarrel with your spouse. Instead of communicating your thoughts and situation to grope for a solution, you make face as if you are being treated grossly unfairly and yell at each other to prove your points aloud, while bickering at each other for not listening to your story. In the end, this one-way communication ends up in psychological wounds and aggravated relationship. Fine communication is a MUST in a marriage. Here are the most notable ‘wrong’ types of communication between couples.

Once the husband and wife start splitting hairs on each other, what started merely as a small argument develops into a nasty confrontation and finally ends up in both persons simmering with anger and frustrations.

In the end, they spit out ‘unspeakable’ to each other such as “I hate you,” or “get out of my sight,” etc. Although later they seek to make up by saying “sorry, I really didn’t mean it..,” damage has already been done and there is no way of undoing it. Yes, it is true that those hurting words during confrontation are not really meant to be uttered. It is only by-products of emotional outbursts.

But the after-shock and the consequences are real. In extreme cases, the couple may end up in divorce. Never ever try to attack your partner with your words, especially when you are angry. When you say things, you’d better say them genuinely from your heart, not on the spur of the moment in maddening outburst.

Some couples show disdain for the other’s comments and opinions. Together with the out-of-control type, this group comprises the most typical type of couple rivalry. This cold-shouldering person tramples on the other person’s pride, causing his/her spouse to feel lonely and alienated. This person doesn’t have a regard for the other’s dignity, and finally incurs life-long scars on both sides.

This type is more like non-communication, rather than a confrontation. Some husbands just walk out of the home whenever there is a conversation on a touchy issue for the family. Some wives hide into the kitchen whenever the husband wants to start a conversation. Silent couples can be more problematic than warring couples.

Both the husband and wife should acknowledge that their lives cannot be separated from each other. Just your own peace of mind doesn’t matter here. You should pay attention to your spouse’s peace of mind also. Simply ignoring a problem doesn’t make it disappear. The longer you stay in denial the worse the problem becomes, and finally is aggravated to the point where it is out of hand.

Sarcastic people tend to twist others’ comments into something much worse and negative. For example, husband asks the wife “are you going to your maiden home today? And the wife retorts back “Yes, why? Any problem with that?!” The husband was only asking if she had a plan to visit her home, and she interpreted this question as accusing her for going to her home too often. As she blurts out like this, the husband also turns sarcastic and shoots back “Wow, I am so impressed with your loyalty for your own home. How about showing a bit of care for my home for a change, huh?”

Here, the wife has started a war of sarcasm. We should stop and check on ourselves if we are being overly negative or critical whenever we engage in a conversation with our spouse.
