Truth about the Probabilities

- 100 blind dates don’t necessarily fare off better than 10 dates

Recently I had a visitor from Gangnam area, a mother having a daughter aged well over 30.  After graduating from college here she went over to the U.S. to continue her study in medicine, and became a medical doctor two years ago.  This mother is in deep concern, for her daughter is not a bit interested in getting married.  Her photo showed her well-defined visage, a good-looking woman.

“I think it all depends on her will to get married or not.”

“… she is in the central area, with few Koreans living there, I guess.  She has neither no time to have relationship, nor a person to start relationship with…”

“Why don’t you tell her to visit Korea over her vacation, so she can have some blind dates.”

“… it is not easy to travel to Seoul… and what kind of man would want to give up life here and follow a woman to the States?  It’d be better to keep looking there in the States.”

I feel sorry to hear her case.   If she were in Korea, she would be one of the most sought-after bride materials.  However, staying outside Korea, she doesn’t even have enough chances to see guys.  Even worse, she is not aware that she is now at a critical moment.  The age range from late 20s to mid-30s can be prime time to blossom one’s career, however at the same time the prime moment TO GET MARRIED!

The same goes for Korea, too.  The prime marriage age has notably gone higher during the past two decades.  During the 90s, those ages were 26-27 for women and 28-29 for men.  Entering the year 2000, the ages moved up to 28-29 for women and 30-31 for men.  Nowadays, the ages are about 5 years higher, with 31-32 for women and 33-34 for men.  Probably fiercer competition on the job front may explain for this.  Also, young people nowadays don’t realize the importance of getting married.  So, things are the same whether in the U.S. or in Korea.  Yet circumstances are quite different between those in Korea, and Korean nationals living outside Korean boundary.  Most of Koreans prefer to marry another Korean.  And their choices are limited due to less Korean population there.

This doesn’t mean Korean nationals in the U.S. should give up marrying to Koreans.  Man-women relationship happens on probability.  Although those in Korea have more chances of being matched or having blind dates, there success rate is not necessarily higher than that for those in the U.S.  Why is that so??  Out of 10 blind dates, the probabilities are: both persons don’t like each other in 2-3 cases; either one side doesn’t like the other in 3-4 cases; and for the rest 2-3 cases, both are attracted to each other.  Those probabilities are more or less the same, whether in 10 cases, or in 100 cases.

Also, since there are ample opportunities for blind dates in Korea, singles here tend to have less sense of urgency.  If one blind date turns out unsuccessful, they easily shake it off thinking “well… I will move on… will get another chance in no time…”  This is called “habitual blind dates syndrome.”  They just keep getting new persons, and keep sailing from one blind date to another, and their eye level ever getting haughtier, with no fruition.  Some people have had hundreds, even a thousand, blind dates, that I know.

On the other hand, in the States, they (Korean singles living in U.S.) take each blind date offered to them real seriously, probably because chances are rare.  With this sincerity, they work out a successful relationship and eventually into marriage.  So, they know how to take it preciously, versus those in Korea who do not appreciate the value of each blind date as something easy to come by.

Singles, don’t despair that you don’t get enough chances.  If you keep hoping and take each chance preciously, and your day will come much earlier than those who may have 1,000 dates.
