Loudmouth is Better Than Tight-lipped

Her Story

I liked this silent guy. This guy became my husband. He didn’t talk much, but his manly strong stare spoke more than a thousand words. This is the very reason why I married him. It has been barely a year since we got married, and this very trait of my husband, which got me fall for him so much, is the very source of my present frustration. I even think probably I fell into the grave I dug up myself.

We married after dating for about six months. I was usually the one who led our relationship. He was so speechless that I usually talked unilaterally, and even now I am the lone talker in our marriage life. We didn’t spend a sufficiently long dating period and he barely opened his mouth. So I don’t know much about him yet, i.e. what food he enjoys, what were his favorite movies, what is his dream in life, etc.

I became fond of my husband in the beginning, because he showed exactly the opposite character from that of my ex-boyfriend. This boyfriend of mine was noisy, bossy and domineering. I was trying to get out of his control and that was when I met my husband. My husband set me free. He was all ears and listened to me always and let me have my way always. I was in happy anticipation that once I married him my marriage life would be full of freedom and happiness.

Now I don’t feel free or happy. Of course my husband let me have freedom as much as I want. But such generosity of his makes me suspicious of his love, and thirst for satisfaction. At times we disagree on issues and get about to quarrel over them. My husband always snaps off the situation by saying “Sorry, I was wrong” and walks away from it. What am I supposed to say in the face of his apologetic smile! I wish he’d rather blast out and say it out loud what’s in his mind.

I am so lonely. I still love him. I know he doesn’t mean to shut me out. Still, I thirst for love.

Tight-lipped man isn’t necessarily a dull husband. The biggest enemy to happiness of a couple is lack of communication. Others may praise her husband as a man of men. But Mrs. Chung, his wife, is ailing in heart. This might be one of the worst types of a husband-wife relationship. Although you cannot share completely just about everything with your spouse, certainly there should be a formation of common grounds for a couple to live together on. This is only possible through continuous conversation between the two.

Once this communication channel starts in motion, the so-called top divorce reasons such as differences in personality or sexual discord can be overcome. Recently in Japan, there was a survey on 609 Japanese housewives in 30s and 40s. As for the question if they had pleasure in sex with their husband, those with positive answer spent 2/more hours a day talking with their husband, whereas those with ‘not pleased at all’ spent only 30 minutes’ conversation with their husband on a daily average. 39% of this displeased group had extra-marital affairs, whereas only 8% of the ‘pleased’ group had affairs. This outcome shows that communicating couples also share healthy sex life. It doesn’t matter whether you live in Japan or in Korea. People are the same more-or-less regardless of where you live.

Interruption of communication is attributable to lack of consideration for the other, poor attitude or timing, etc. I know a couple who are known to be ‘lovebirds.’ The wife makes a point of not offending her husband no matter what in the morning as he leaves for work although she may be pretty much pissed off on something. By not disturbing the husband’s mood in the morning, she says, this may prevent him from causing troubles or inter-personal problems outside home due to his spoiled mood.

Marrying a person is different from just dating the person. If your partner turns out to be a jerk while dating, you can tolerate a couple of hours, go home and never meet him again. However, you cannot do this in marriage. Ogden Nash, an American poet, once wrote in his poem that: “To keep your marriage brimming with love in the loving cup, whenever you’re wrong, admit it; whenever you’re right, shut up.” Yes, there are moments you’d rather shut up. But in a marriage, silence may Not ALWAYS BE A GOLD.
