Cinderella StoryThereafter --- PART I

Cinderella married the prince, but was never happy

The ballroom dance party was reaching its peak with blaring fanfare sounds. It was the royal party to celebrate our wedding, and I was of course at the center of this event. All the eyes and lightings of the hall followed my every movement, and the prince, my husband, whispered into my ears in his sweet voice “you are now my wife, so you don’t need to disappear at the midnight anymore.”

True. I was no more who I was before, the poor little Cinderella covered in dirt. I became the happiest and luckiest lady in the whole world. I believed all my misery and sorrow would be fully compensated for as there would be only happy and prosperous days ahead of me.

Our marriage was quite different from that of commoners. I was not from a noble family, and I was ignorant about the royal customs and protocols. So, I had to spend many hours during a day to learn royal etiquettes and refinement education. My husband, a crown prince, had a very tough schedule himself as he was learning to rule the country from the king, my father-in-law, in taking care of many issues of the country. Although we just got married, we could barely see each other late at night.

In fact, we were not given enough time dating before getting married. Although my husband spent many days looking for me all over the country with only a shoe that I left behind, the moment we miraculously encountered again, we rushed into the wedding ceremony, allowing little time to get to know each other. Even after becoming man and wife, we are still uncomfortable with each other, not to mention the few hours allowed for us to be togetherNow, I begin to get skeptical about this marriage and start to envy ordinary people and their ordinary marriage life.

It had been about a month since I got married that I invited my family to the palace. My step mother and her daughters were begging me to forgive all their previous cruelty and cold shouldering and I decided to let go of the past and accepted them as my family. My husband threw a state dinner to welcome them and even my parents-in-law were present there despite their busy schedules of ruling the country. I was delighted after a long while, after spending many days feeling lonely in this huge palace.

But my delight was only momentary, as I happened to see my mother-in-law slightly frowning her face. My folks were bewildered as exotic dishes, which names they don’t even know, were being served endlessly, with numerous utensils in different sizes and shapes, on which usage they had no idea at all. They fumbled and blundered and there was an embarrassing silence. They were not to be blamed for not knowing those delicate manners. They only needed to learn. But they were the target of all the accusing and condescending stares, and Cinderella felt stifled about all this. It is going to be another sleepless night, she sighed.

Sun rose up again. It is another new day. Today’s schedule is a ballroom dance party in honor of visiting foreign dignitaries. She has to accompany a premier’s wife. Looking at her at the banquet with an interpreter, the queen, her mother-in-law, gives an accusatory glance at her again, and softly talks to herself, as if to blame the new crown princess, “my.. my.. a crown princess can’t even speak a foreign language..” Now I am resentful. It’s been barely half a year since I came to this palace, and I am just doing my utmost to catch up with this and that. I am really struggling to do my best, and what more do they want from me? Why do they pick up on me so hard?

Anywayballroom dance always excites me. This is the place where I met my husband for the first time, and just dancing with my husband with our eyes meeting with each other fills me with excitement and delight. But today he is different. His eyes are not looking at mine. He is looking away onto something else. I am afraid that I may be out of his mind at this moment, as I am out of the range of his sight.

My husband is the only person I can rely on. Although my youth life was full of mistreatment and misery, I firmly believed that our love would last forever as I took a step into this palace where everything is new and difficult for me. But, my husband is becoming increasingly aloof, and at times I sense the way he looks at me is not the same as the way it used to be. I feel like I am being swept away by gigantic waves of despair. --- To be continued to Part II
